Google Earth 4
See the world without leaving your desktop with Google Earth!
With Google Earth you get amazing detail in high resolution 3D space. You are presented with a 3D model of the globe, which you can tilt, pan and spin around with your mouse. Using the scroll wheel lets you zoom in and out with an extraordinary level of detail to high-resolution satellite images of hundreds of cities, giving users a birds-eye view of streets, buildings, parks and landmarks. It's incredibly addictive and fun!
You can also create your own placemarks with custom icons for personal spots like home, work, your favourite pub or the best beaches in town. You can then |
|
save maps as JPEGs and e-mail them to friends through
Google Earth's File menu.
Browsing heavily populated US cities gives you the opportunity to switch on 3D buildings, which, although not textured, are really quite amazing. When using this feature, you can adjust the perspective by tilting down from an aerial view to a horizontal view like you're looking down a street and surrounded by buildings. It really quite amazing to navigate around cities.
You can also get GPS road directions and navigate your driving path. Land terrain is rendered so you will see the landscap of a location you are looking at. Google Earth is a truely amazing piece of software, download it and try it out for yourself.

Google Earth History
Google Earth was developed by Keyhole, Inc., a company Google acquired in 2004. The product was renamed Google Earth in 2005 and is currently available for use on personal computers running Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP, Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above, Linux (released on June 12, 2006), and FreeBSD. In addition to releasing an updated Keyhole based client, Google also added the imagery from the Earth database to their web based mapping software.
Google Earth Controls
Zooming
You can operate Google Earth with your mouse and keywoard. Double clicking on a location causes the camera to zoom in on the spot. The mouse roller can also be used for zooming in and out and the plus and minus keys work as well on some versions.
Moving
The viewing window can be moved left, right, up and down as well as diagonal by clicking a location with the mouse and the moving the cursor in the opposite direction to that in which you want to go (intuitively, grabbing hold of the view and dragging it under you).
If you drag and release the mouse while the view is moving, the view will continue moving until stopped. A simpler way to move is to click both sides of the mouse at once at any spot on the screen, and (depending on how far you are from the center of the viewpoint) you will move at that certain speed. The arrow keys also allow you to move. The left key moves left, the right key moves right and so on. However, Using the keyboard does not move you as quickly as the mouse does. The final way of moving is to search for a location or post code in the search box in the top left corner or clicking on one of the pre-set locations.
Panning
Google earth also allows you to move higher and lower and to rotate the camera. This can be done by clicking and dragging with the right mouse button or using the <, >, pg. up and pg. down keys.
Searching
In Global search
the box in the top left of the screen allows you to search for any location on earth quickly and pain free, just type in the place you want to see and press play to have the camera go straight there. For a more precise search, type in the place followed by its approximate location i.e. New York City, USA
Local search Google Earth also allows you to search your local area for something, eg a dentist. NB It may require confirmation of the area you want to search. If so, enter a postcode.
Most land areas are covered in satellite imagery with a resolution of about 15 m per pixel. Some population centers are also covered by aircraft imagery (orthophotography) with several pixels per meter.
Oceans are covered at a much lower resolution, as are a number of islands; most notably, Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, and the Isles of Scilly off southwest England, are at a resolution of about 500 m or less.
Place name and road detail vary greatly from place to place. They are most accurate in the USA and Europe, but regular mapping updates are improving coverage elsewhere.
Google has resolved many inaccuracies in the vector mapping since the original public release of the software, without requiring an update to the program itself. An example of this was the absence from Google Earth's map boundaries of the Nunavut territory in Canada, a territory that had been created on April 1, 1999; this mistake was corrected by one of the data updates in early 2006. Recent updates have also increased the coverage of detailed aerial photography, particularly in western Europe.
Cloud cover and shadows can make it difficult or impossible to see details in some land areas, including the shadow side of mountains.
The stars in the background are not random. Google Earth uses a real star map to render the background. you can get more information at http://earth.google.com/
